Repairing diecast Hornets

New postby Battlestar » Wed Jul 14, 2010 6:44 am

G'Day All

Earlier today (my time) a mate dropped off three Franklin Mint F-18 Hornets that he didn't want any more.
One is still in good condition.

The other two have been banged around, with weapons pylons and a tail fin coming off one of them. Both have cockpits that are 'frosting' up, and they both have a coat of dust.

What glue should I use to put parts back on the model?
How would you clean off this think layer of dust?

Suggestions are so welcome!

Dust, easy do what P-nuts does and take them into the shower next time you have one!

Frosted canopies hm , well the boys in the US use Future Polish, never seen it in the UK maybe you can get the stuff in OZ. :?

btw, I have used warm soapy water on a couple of very dusty models, but first check that the markings are pad printed not decals.
OK OK so jets are cool I admit it. There, happy now.(but sooo expensive).

Johnsons Klear floor polish is very similar or so I am told.

Hope that helps.

Why are the canopies frosting :? The pilot making a cake :?

Glue parts----> CA (cyanoacrylate or "Super Glue")

Dust? I use a big poofy make-up brush.....both on my models and when I get ready for a night out. If the dust is super heavy, I've washed diecast models at the kitchen sink with warm water and liquid hand soap....and when I'm done the liquid hand soap is good for "other" things. Pat dry, or, carefully use a can of computer compressed air to blow dry....and the compressed air is especially nice if blown on your bum.

Correct. That stuff will do wonders on clear plastics!

If you've got a steady hand, use CA glue. If not, use white glue because it can be wiped clean with a damp cloth once dry. Also, there is a product called Tamiya Extra Thin Cement, this is similar to CA glue but very thin, so all you've got to do is to hold the two pieces in place and run the brush through the seam. It is a bit expensive, though.
For the frosting, take them out and dip them in Klear (SC Johnson's), I think the best equivalent in Australia is "Pledge One Go". Not the best but can be used.
EDIT- I found through some modelling forums that a shop named ASDA still has Klear, you might want to try it.

The dust will come off if you..erm..dust it. Use a wide brush (a makeup brush would do, just make sure it is free of makeup!) If you've got a compressor, use compressed air to dust it out.
Hope this helps and post pictures when you're done!

I fart on my models to blow the dust off them...but first check that the markings are pad printing, not decals (don't want them pealing off)
